THE WHITE BUFFALO ROBE 1833

24" x 36" oil on canvas

In 1833 the Mandan heard that a group of Blackfeet were traveling to Fort Union, Dakota Territory to trade a white buffalo robe. The Mandan gathered eight of their finest ponies and trade goods exceeding the value of those ponies and went to meet with the Blackfeet for the robe. Tribal animosity made this an unusual event. The Mandan returned home on foot bringing with them the white robe. © Steven Lang OPAM
