THE BRICK MAKER

THE BRICK MAKER

24" x 20" oil on canvas

The thought of a young woman making adobe bricks came to me as I was in the midst of my painting "Approaching Bent's Old Fort". Adobe structures such as Bents Old Fort required year round maintenance. The work was usually performed by Mexican laborers brought north from Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Fort was located along the Arkansas River in present day Colorado. It was blown up in 1852 after a cholera epidemic by the surviving brother George Bent who established a new fort 30 miles down river. The Old Fort has been reconstructed and is now a National Historic Site. © Steven Lang OPAM
